Biodegradation Testing

ISO 14852 :

Determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials in an aqueous medium — Method by analysis of evolved carbon dioxide

Discover a reliable method for determining the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials in an aqueous medium. This testing approach, measuring the evolved carbon dioxide to assess the degree of aerobic biodegradability, even for materials containing formulation additives.

Standardized Laboratory Conditions :

The test material is exposed in a synthetic medium to an inoculum from activated sludge under aerobic conditions. By replicating these controlled conditions, we gain valuable insights into the biodegradation potential of plastic materials.

Applicable Materials :

This versatile testing method applies to various plastic materials, including :

Natural and/or synthetic polymers, copolymers, or mixtures thereof.

Plastic materials containing additives such as plasticizers, colorants, or other compounds and water-soluble polymers can also be tested

Materials that do not inhibit the microorganisms present in the inoculum. Inhibitory effects can be determined using an inhibition control or another appropriate method, ensuring accurate biodegradability assessments.
