Biodegradation Testing

ASTM D5864 – Testing Lubricants for Biodegradability :

The ASTM D5864 standard test method assesses the aerobic aquatic biodegradability of lubricants and their components. It is a critical tool for evaluating the environmental impact of oils, greases, and other lubricants.

OECD 301B
How It Works :
  1. Principle :
    • Lubricant/sample is exposed to microorganisms in an aquatic environment with oxygen.
    • Carbon dioxide (CO2) produced during the degradation process is measured to determine biodegradability.

  2. Test Procedure :
    • A prepared test medium uses activated sludge, surface water, or soil as the inoculum.
    • The lubricant is added to the medium and aerated with CO2-free air.
    • CO2 emitted is trapped and quantified using specific methods.

  3. Results :
    • Biodegradability is calculated as a percentage of the CO2 produced.
Importance of the Test :
  1. Environmental Protection :
    • Helps identify lubricants that minimize environmental harm by breaking down naturally in aquatic ecosystems.

  2. Regulatory Compliance :
    • Ensures adherence to environmental laws and standards for biodegradable materials.

  3. Sustainability :
    • Supports the development and use of eco-friendly lubricants that align with global sustainability goals.

  4. Product Innovation and Eco-labeling :
    • Encourages innovation in creating biodegradable products and qualifies products for green certifications and eco-labels.

  5. Mitigating Pollution Risks :
    • Reduces the risk of long-term pollution from lubricant spills in water bodies.
Conducting this test is vital for industries to validate their commitment to sustainable practices and offer environmentally responsible products.
