ASTM D5511 :

Determining Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials under High-Solids Anaerobic-Digestion Conditions

ASTM D5511

ASTM D5511 is a method used to study the biodegradation of plastic materials in anaerobic digestion conditions with high-solids content. This process is significant because it impacts the breakdown of other waste materials enclosed by the plastic, as well as the quality and appearance of the resulting digestate after the anaerobic digestion.

Biodegradation of plastics in high-solids anaerobic digestion can lead to safe disposal of these plastics through aerobic and anaerobic solid-waste-treatment plants. This procedure allows us to determine the rate and extent of biodegradability when plastic products are placed in a high-solids anaerobic digester during the production of digestate from municipal solid waste.

Understanding how plastics biodegrade in these conditions is crucial for better waste management and environmental sustainability. ASTM D5511 helps researchers and industries assess the biodegradability of plastic materials in anaerobic digestion units, leading to safer and more effective waste treatment practices.
